Why choose a midwife, isn't
that a bit old-fashioned? Yes, and no. Women have helped women give
birth since the beginning of time. It has been only in the last
100 or so years that doctors, mostly male, have dominated the birth
industry. It is interesting to note that as sanitation and nutrition
improved (not as medical intervention has increased) over the centuries,
so has birth safety. When doctors first were involved in childbirth,
the infant and maternal mortality rates soared. This was largely
because doctors were not as diligent in their cleanliness as midwives,
and some would even go directly from doing autopsies to delivering
babies without washing their hands! Adding doctors to routine childbirth
caused a setback in the improvement in infant and maternal mortality
that the midwives had experienced. Had they not gotten involved
in birth, our infant and maternal mortality rates would be much
lower than they are today.
